Health

Without good health, people struggle in many ways. Access to health care and the knwoledge to make smart choices are key to a good quality of life.

Improving people’s health is a focus of Cedar Valley United Way. We are working to improve health by:

  • Empowering individuals by reducing substance abuse, child abuse and domestic violence
  • Increasing health education and preventitive care
  • Improving maternal health and infant well-being

Data shows us our investments are working. The teen birth rate in Black Hawk County has fallen from 31 births per 1,000 females in 2010 to 18 in 2014. But there is work to be done. 29,000 adults in Black Hawk County will experience a mental health problem or illness in their lifetime. Iowa ranks last in the number of state psychiatric beds with only 2 beds for every 100,000 residents, and of those beds 1.2 are forensic psychiatric beds. 29% of adults are obese. 7.8% of babies are born at a low birth weight, increasing their risk for preventable health problems.

United Way is working to fix these problems and give people the opportunity to live a healthier life. Investments in health include the following programs:
