Leighty Justis to Speak at Women's Philanthropy Connection Event

Cedar Valley United Way’s Women’s Philanthropy Connection (WPC) hosts its education event “Family Philanthropy: Women at the Heart of the Matter” Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Cedar Falls.

The event will begin with an 11:30 a.m. lunch followed by a presentation by Jane Leighty Justis.

Justis is a trustee and the executive director of The Leighty Foundation, founded in Waterloo, Iowa, by her father, Ike Leighty, in 1985. The Leighty Foundation’s mission is to carry on the Leighty family legacy of service and stewardship by leveraging their financial resources, primarily in the areas of earth protection, education and the promotion of philanthropy and volunteerism.

“The Women’s Philanthropy Connection for Cedar Valley United Way works to inspire philanthropy through our annual education events, and this year is no exception,” Angela Fuller, WPC chair for the education committee, said. “Jane Leighty Justis’ presentation will teach us all how to encourage philanthropy to our younger generations, as well as rekindle our own passions and dreams for improving our community.”

Justis is active locally and nationally in the promotion of philanthropy through leadership roles with organizations such as the Council on Foundations, the National Center for Family Philanthropy, Women’s Philanthropy Institute, the Colorado Association of Funders, the Colorado Springs Funders Forum and the Association of Small Foundations. She has served on the board of Pikes Peak Community Foundation, and is currently a member of their grants committee.

In addition to her role with the Leighty Foundation, Justis is also a nationally recognized speaker about the opportunities and challenges of family philanthropy.

Justis has a degree in education from the University of Denver, a certification in volunteer management from the University of Colorado and a master’s in Christian leadership from Fuller Theological Seminary. She and her husband live in the mountains of Colorado.

An opportunity for questions will follow Justis’ presentation.

The Women’s Philanthropy Connection started as an endeavor of Cedar Valley United Way in 2008 and focuses on empowering women to create real and lasting improvement in people’s lives. Its mission is to help women express their philanthropic passion through education, mentoring and volunteering. WPC membership is open to women who are at an annual giving level of at least $1,000 to Cedar Valley United Way. Giving can be on an individual basis or through combined household giving. Members can choose to participate solely through their giving or through their giving and volunteering on WPC projects such as Women to Women Career Mentoring—a joint project with Hawkeye Community College.
